In many cultures music is a way to get closer to God. The music documentary CLOSER TO GOD follows in the footsteps of Islamic mystics on the Indian subcontinent and immerses itself in the spiritual everyday life of the mystic Gogha Sain and the mastersinger Ustad Saami. The mastersinger dedicates his entire life to music, an ancient heritage of the undivided subcontinent, and its transfer to the next generation. Gogha Sain places his existence and work entirely at the service of God and his fellow human beings. As different as their path is, they have one thing in common: that only those who can recognize themselves can respect their fellow human beings. Far away from the usual headlines about terror and crises in Pakistan, CLOSER TO GOD is a fascinating reflection on another world culture, but also on the transcendental dimension of humankind. Through careful staging, the director concentrates on making the beauty of lived spirituality more visible, thus making space for the universality of being human.
